The Paris Silver Skin, excelling both as a spring onion and a bulbing onion, is renowned for its petite, pure-white bulbs highly regarded as ‘cocktail’ onions or for inclusion in casseroles and stews. When enjoyed as spring onions, they offer a sweet, mild flavour with a delightful crunch. Maturing into bulbs, their sweetness intensifies.
These onions are remarkably easy to cultivate and thrive even in light, nutrient-deficient soil. The fact this heritage variety – dating from the 1770s – is still popular today, demonstrates its value.
Recommended by the RHS as a lure and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects when allowed to flower. So, if some of your plants grow a bit too far and space permits, consider letting them flower instead of promptly uprooting them.
